Choosing a Just Right Book
Choosing a Just Right Book
A “just right” book is not too easy or too hard. It should be interesting and you should want to read it. Use the following rule to help you decide if a book is just right.
THE FIVE FINGER RULE
1. Find a page of text with few or no pictures in the middle of the book.
2. Begin to read the page.
3. Each time you come to a word you don’t know, or a concept you don’t understand, hold one finger up.
4. When you finish the page, count how many fingers you have up.
0-1 Fingers: The book is too easy for you.
2-3 Fingers: This is a just right book!
4-5+ Fingers: The book is too hard; try again later in the year
